Life is full of unexpected twists—plans change, challenges arise, and things don’t always go the way we hope. But what if the circumstances themselves don’t really matter? What if the way we see those circumstances is what truly shapes our experience?
A Lesson in Perspective
The other evening, I had planned to take my son, Jayden, to his hockey practice instead of having him ride with his coach. There was a parent meeting at the ice rink, and I was eager to hear about the team’s plans for next season.
Jayden and I had been driving and chatting for about 25 minutes, simply enjoying the ride, when—just five minutes before reaching the rink—he saw a message saying that both practice and the meeting had been canceled due to technical issues. My first thought was, Great! That means we can pick up Daddy, and he won’t have to walk home in the cold. Then I started to feel bad for the team members who drive from out of state for practice. I realized they had a much longer drive than us, and I felt grateful that we don’t live too far from the ice rink.
On the way home, something small but beautiful happened. Every traffic light we passed was green—at least 15 in a row. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude, as if life was offering me a little gift.
When we reached the station, my husband had just arrived. I smiled and said, “Today feels like my lucky day—you won’t believe it! We got all green lights, Jayden and I had an extra hour of chat time, and we got to pick you up so you didn’t have to walk home in the cold.”
He chuckled and said, “That’s interesting… practice and the parent meeting got canceled, and you still think today is your lucky day.” That moment hit me deeply. It wasn’t the circumstances that made the day feel lucky—it was my perspective. Choosing How We See the World
Life presents us with countless moments, some expected and others completely out of our control. But in every situation, we have a choice: we can focus on what went wrong, or we can shift our perspective and find something to be grateful for.
If I had chosen to focus on the inconvenience, I might have spent the entire drive home feeling frustrated and annoyed. But by choosing gratitude, my entire experience changed—I was able to see what went right instead.
This isn’t about ignoring challenges or pretending things are always perfect. It’s about realizing that we always have the power to shape our experience through our perspective.
A Simple Shift That Changes Everything
Next time something doesn’t go as planned, try asking yourself:
What’s one small good thing I can focus on right now?
How can I reframe this moment to see it differently?
What lesson or hidden gift could this situation be offering me?
Gratitude doesn’t erase difficulties, but it does soften them. It turns small moments—like a series of green lights—into something meaningful. And the more we practice shifting our focus, the more we realize that our happiness doesn’t depend on everything going right; it depends on how we choose to see the world.
Because in the end, the circumstances don’t really matter—only our perspective does.
